How Your Thanksgiving Turkey Can Help Boost Your Conception Chances

by Nita Ewald on November 22, 2017

With Thanksgiving celebration (for those who live in the US), many of you will have spent hours preparing a fantastic turkey dinner for your family. But you may also have probably not given much thought to the turkey carcass or its connection to your fertility.

Drinking bone broth has long been connected to supporting fertility naturally. So why not try it out for yourself and make the best use of that turkey?

Bone broth has long been recognized as a food type which helps to balance hormones, thus supporting fertility naturally. This is because it contains the nutrients which our cells need, providing amazing support to our bodies.

It can improve many aspects of health, including the gut and digestive system, hair and nails, skin conditions and immune problems. And you only need to drink as little as a cup each day! You can also now buy it in supermarkets if you don’t want the hassle of trying to make it from scratch every time. More on this in a little bit…

How does bone broth aid fertility?

The main reason bone broth helps with fertility is that it’s good for your gut and digestive system, which is intrinsically linked to your hormones. If your gut and digestive system aren’t in good working order, then you will not reap the benefits of all the healthy foods and supplements you are putting into your body.

Healing and balancing your gut helps to reduce any inflammation in the body. Moreover, it helps all of those nutrients, vitamins and minerals be absorbed properly in order to benefit your body and health fully. Drinking bone broth can also support the kidney function. Kidney function in turn, supports your adrenal glands which are responsible for creating sex hormones and cortisol – you need both of these for fertility and a good immune system.

How does bone broth support the gut and digestive system?

The slow cooking process releases the collagen from the bones, which turns into gelatin once cooked. This material helps to heal your gut, solving issues such as gut inflammation and leaky gut.

Gut inflammation can cause cortisol spikes, which then throw out your hormone balance, causing all kinds of issues in your body. That’s why gut health is vital to fertility. Digestive problems like bloating or IBS can all be related to hormone issues.

Once this gut healing has happened, more nutrients are able to be absorbed properly by your body and these nutrients help to restore your hormone balance again.

Also, bone broth is full of amino acids. These are great for helping the body to remove excess hormones which again, can impact on fertility greatly. An imbalance of estrogen, for example, can cause conditions like PCOS and endometriosis. Amino acids help to restore the balance and detoxify your hormone system.

The other magic ingredient in bone broth is calcium, which is again, really supportive to the body in balancing hormones naturally and helping our liver to detoxify, making our body healthier overall and ready to support a new life growing within.

How do I use bone broth on a daily basis?

If you don’t fancy the idea of drinking a mug of bone broth every day, then there a number of different ways you can use it to incorporate it into your daily diet.

  1. Drink it as a snack between meals, as a straight hot drink
  2. Use it to cook with as a sauce instead of using oil
  3. Mix it with grains such as quinoa, to create a unique and tasty side dish
  4. Add it to veggies and noodles to create a delicious dish

You can also freeze bone broth. You may keep it in the freezer for several months, ensuring you never run out of a ready supply. If you make a big batch in a crock pot, then freeze it in individual portions you can make enough to keep you going for several months, in one cook.

You can keep it in the fridge for a couple of days as well – just be aware that due to all the gelatin content, once it is cold it can resemble jello, which is a good thing! That shows that you have created a bone broth packed full of good collagen and gelatin, which is what you need. It might look a bit weird but it will be fine once you warm it up again.

How can I use bone broth to improve conception chances?

If you are trying to conceive but not having success, it could be down to hormone imbalances in the body, and bone broth can really help with that particular problem. Drinking a cup a day can help to reduce inflammation in the gut and support the immune system, enabling the body to balance its hormone levels naturally.

This can have a huge impact on fertility issues caused by hormones. It also helps to detoxify the body of excess hormones, which can lead to problems like PCOS. This is another reason drinking bone broth can help to support your body preconception.

So, as you can see, after enjoying your Thanksgiving turkey dinner, make the most of the carcass. It can help improve your chances of conception. My old time favorite recipe for making bone broth is that from the Nourishing Traditions: click here for the recipes (choose the chicken broth’s recipe for the turkey carcass.)

If you’d prefer the convenience of buying ready-made bone broth , I highly recommend Erie Bone Broth. It’s a Paleo approved company crafting slow-simmered, small-batch, nutrient dense, handmade bone broth in Cleveland, OH. They produce four flavors year-round: chicken, beef, turkey, and bison. They also have two seasonal flavors: a limited edition elk one and a veggie one. All of their broths are made with 100% grass-fed beef and bison, and organic chicken and turkey from Ohio farmers. Their organic veggies and spices are locally sourced whenever possible. Their product has no added sodium, and is gluten-free. It is also frozen rather than canned or dried, preserving the beneficial collagen to the best of our ability. As so, the drinker can get the full benefit of our liquid-gold.

Whether you make the broth yourself or purchase the ready-made kind, share your experience with me! I’d love to know how you use the bone broth. Let me know too whether or not it helps with your health issues, if any.
